In the five years since, he has dealt with historic closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, devastating floods in 2022 and record visitation of 4.8 million people in 2021. The scope, size and diversity of issues at play in Yellowstone mean a wide range of individuals and groups have varying opinions on how the park is managed. For the past two months, newly arrived Grand Teton National Park Superintendent David Vela has been meeting with staff, elected officials and community members to learn about a host of challenges he'll likely be dealing with in the coming months. That includes a range of natural resource issues like grizzly bear management, elk hunting in the park and river paddling. Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott will retire next month after more than nine years as the park's chief administrator. Scott is the third longest-serving superintendent in Grand Teton’s history, and the first female to fill the park’s top position, according to a statement released Friday by the park's public affairs office.
