Yellowstone road opens for ‘spring bicycling’ season

Bicyclists willing to brave the unpredictable elements of spring in Yellowstone National Park can now travel 49 miles of newly plowed park roads from the West Entrance at West Yellowstone, Mont., to Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyo.
There is no bicycle access to Old Faithful or Canyon until the first interior park roads open to public motorized vehicle access on Friday, April 21.
A bicycle trip into Yellowstone this time of year is not to be undertaken lightly. The quickly changing weather can be challenging. Snow and ice may still cover sections of road. Tall snow banks may line roads and pullouts be may be snow packed.
Bicyclists are required to ride single file and follow all other rules of the road. Cyclists should expect to encounter and yield to snowplows or other motorized vehicles operated by park employees or construction workers traveling in conjunction with park operations.
Bicyclists should be prepared to encounter bears, bison, elk, wolves, and other wildlife at any time. Continue Reading →

Grand Teton pathways to close during construction

Construction will soon begin on the next phase of Grand Teton National Park’s shared-use pathway system. The new pathway segment (1.25 miles from Moose Junction to Antelope Flats Road) is expected to be completed by late fall 2015 and open for public use in spring 2016. In addition, intermittent closures of the 14.5 miles of existing park pathways will occur through mid-October to allow for application of a sealant material and for safety improvement work. Grand Teton pathway adds additional section, seeks volunteer “ambassadors”

A multi-purpose pathway that winds through Grand Teton National Park and its gateway communities will add an additional newly completed section later this year, and the National Park Service is seeking volunteer "ambassadors" to help manage traffic on the popular route. For the fourth year, Grand Teton National Park is recruiting volunteers to serve as ambassadors for the pathway that extends from Dornan’s restaurant and wine shop in the Moose area to South Jenny Lake. Volunteer ambassadors will patrol the eight-mile-long paved pathway on foot, bicycle or roller blades to meet and greet other pathway users, provide emergency assistance and inform people of regulations. Bicyclists get Yellowstone Park roads to themselves for a month

A bicyclist rides past freshly plowed snow along the road between Norris and Canyon Village in this 2012 file photo.

Bicycling through Yellowstone National Park can be both a grand adventure and a harrowing undertaking. With winter bicycle travel impossible on most roads and summer roads often clogged with buses and RVs, some hardy cyclists focus on the month before the park opens each spring as a time when they have roads largely to themselves. Proposed law could ban bicyclists from some roads in Grand Teton National Park

A paved multipurpose pathway that stretches eight miles through part of Grand Teton National Park has received high marks from bicyclists since it opened in 2009, but some of those same bikers worry that a proposed federal law may force them off the adjacent highway and require them to use only the pathway. The situation is not unique to Grand Teton. A pending federal transportation spending bill, dubbed the "mandatory sidepath law" by opponents, would require cyclists to use paved bike paths on any federal lands where the path is within 100 yards of a federal road with a speed limit of 30 mph or higher.
