Staff accommodations in Yellowstone National Park have typically leaned toward the more rustic end of the spectrum, starting with a series of remote cabins built by U.S. Army soldiers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Guest quarters have at times been only marginally better, with some lodging meant as temporary housing still being used a half-century later. So it was with understandable fanfare that a Yellowstone lodging concessioner earlier this month showed off two new environmentally friendly housing projects, both built using modular construction, and with a focus on sustainable building and design practices. Yellowstone seeks proposals for guided horse trips

The National Park Service (NPS) has released a prospectus soliciting proposals from businesses interested in providing guided saddle and pack stock trips in Yellowstone National Park. The NPS plans to award up to 42 new concession contracts. Proposals are due by 4:00 p.m. March 17, 2015. The NPS anticipates awarding the ten-year contacts in fall 2015 with an effective date of January 1, 2016. Each contract has a preferred offeror. Continue Reading →

Grand Teton to issue contracts for youth backpacking

The National Park Service will issue a prospectus soliciting proposals for the award of two concession contracts within Grand Teton National Park to provide guided overnight backpacking services for youths under the age of 21, including associated transportation, food service, and guided day hikes. New contracts bring changes to Yellowstone winter tour business

The business landscape for winter tour operators in Yellowstone National Park saw a shake-up this week as the National Park Service awarded a series of concessions contracts that will remain in effect for the next decade. Some longtime snowmobile and snow coach operators were selected to continue guiding winter visitors into Yellowstone, while many others with decades of experience were not among those awarded new contracts. Yellowstone invites proposals for winter tours by snowmobile, snow coach

The National Park Service has released a prospectus soliciting proposals from businesses interested in providing guided, interpretive over-snow vehicle tours of Yellowstone National Park. A total of 23 new contracts will be awarded and put into place for the 2014-2015 winter season. They will take the place of 13 concession contracts for guided interpretive snow coach tours and 21 commercial use authorizations for guided interpretive snowmobile tours currently in place in Yellowstone. Yellowstone winter tour operators wary of new concessions contracts

Yellowstone National Park managers passed a major milestone last week with the release of a final winter-use rule that appears to have gained widespread acceptance as a workable solution to 15 years of ongoing legal challenges over snowmobile travel in the park. NPS aims to convert Old Faithful worker cabins back to Yellowstone visitor lodging

The National Park Service has released for public review and comment a proposal to return some cabins housing workers in the Old Faithful area back to visitor use. The preferred alternative in the Old Faithful Cabin Repurposing and Dormitory Construction Plan Environmental Assessment would increase available summer lodging units in the Old Faithful area.
