{"id":10469,"date":"2015-02-10T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T21:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yellowstonegate.com\/?p=10469"},"modified":"2015-02-10T14:39:27","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T21:39:27","slug":"warm-weather-prompts-yellowstone-area-bears-out-of-hibernation-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yellowstonegate.com\/?p=10469","title":{"rendered":"Warm weather prompts Yellowstone area bears out of hibernation early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unseasonably warm winter temperatures may be the reason behind bear activity in Yellowstone National Park, as February temperatures have hovered near record highs across the region.<\/p>\n<p>The first confirmed report of grizzly bear activity in Yellowstone occurred Monday, when a grizzly bear was observed late in the afternoon, scavenging on a bison carcass in the central portion of the Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<p>With the potential for more bears to emerge early from hibernation, hikers, skiers and snowshoers are advised to stay in groups of three of more, make noise on the trail and carry bear spray.\u00a0 The same advice goes for those taking guided snowmobile trips in Yellowstone, park officials said in a statement released Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Bears begin looking for food soon after they emerge from their dens.\u00a0 They are attracted to elk and bison that have died during the winter.\u00a0 Carcasses are an important enough food source that bears will sometimes react aggressively when surprised while feeding on them.<\/p>\n<p>Updated bear safety information is available on the Yellowstone bear safety Web page at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/planyourvisit\/bearsafety.htm\">http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/planyourvisit\/bearsafety.htm<\/a> and in the park newspaper distributed at all park entrances.<\/p>\n<p>Yellowstone also implements seasonal bear management areas closures to reduce encounters between bears and humans in areas where elk and bison carcasses are in high density.\u00a0 A listing of these closures can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/parkmgmt\/bearclosures.htm\">http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/parkmgmt\/bearclosures.htm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yellowstone regulations require visitors to stay 100 yards from black and grizzly bears at all times.\u00a0 The best defense is to stay a safe distance from bears and use binoculars, a spotting scope or telephoto lens to get a closer look.\u00a0 All visitors traveling in the park away from developed areas should stay in groups of three or more, make noise on the trail, keep an eye out for bears and carry bear spray.\u00a0 Bear spray has proven to be a good last line of defense, if kept handy and used according to directions when a bear is approaching within 30 to 60 feet.<\/p>\n<p>While firearms are allowed in the park, the discharge of a firearm is a violation of park regulations.
