Later in the morning, park staff saw two more grizzly bears scavenging carcasses in the northern part of the park. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">When bears emerge from hibernation they look for food and often feed on elk, bison and other animals that died over the winter. Sometimes, bears will react aggressively while feeding on carcasses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">All of Yellowstone National Park and much of the surrounding area is bear country. Park officials advise the public to stay safe in bear country by following these guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/learn\/nature\/bearreact.htm\"><span class=\"s6\">Prepare for a bear encounter.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/planyourvisit\/abeardoesntcare.htm\"><span class=\"s7\">Carry bear spray<\/span><\/a>, know how to use it, and make sure it\u2019s accessible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Stay alert.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Hike or ski in groups of three or more, stay on maintained trails, and make noise. Avoid hiking at dusk, dawn, or at night<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Do not run if you encounter a bear.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Stay 100 yards away from black and grizzly bears. Use binoculars, a telescope, or telephoto lens to get a closer look. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Store food, garbage, barbecue grills, and other attractants in hard-sided vehicles or bear-proof food storage boxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Learn more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/planyourvisit\/bearsafety.htm\"><span class=\"s7\">bear safety<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYellowstone visitors care deeply about preserving bears and observing them in the wild,\u201d said\u00a0Kerry Gunther, the park\u2019s Bear Management Specialist. \u201cCarrying bear spray is the best way for them to participate in bear conservation because reducing potential conflicts protects both people and bears.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">While firearms are allowed in the park, the discharge of a firearm by visitors is a violation of park regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The park restricts certain activities in locations where there is a high density of elk and bison carcasses and lots of bears.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yell\/learn\/management\/bearclosures.htm\"><span class=\"s7\">Restrictions began in some bear management areas on Friday, March 10<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Please report bear sightings and encounters to a park ranger immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spring is officially a few days away, but after a bearish winter, the first grizzly of the season has been spotted in Yellowstone National Park.\u00a0 Early Wednesday morning, March 15, a park employee observed a grizzly bear between Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower-Roosevelt, according to a statement released by the park&#8217;s public affairs office.
