Here are 10 projects worthy of year-end giving, either on behalf of someone else or as a gift to the world&#8217;s first national park:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. ADOPT-A-HORSE<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $5 per day or $2,000 will cover the cost of one horse for a year. Support helps ensure that Yellowstone rangers and horses are better equipped for patrols, firefighting, search-and-rescue efforts and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. BEAR BOXES FOR CAMPGROUNDS<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $1,100 per box. The installation of bear-proof food storage boxes in roadside campgrounds improves visitor safety, promotes conservation of threatened grizzly bears, and enhances the visitor experience in Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. PARK JOURNEYS<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $132,000: This program brings underserved urban and rural youth to Yellowstone for a five-day leadership and academic experience. YPF is seeking funding to expand the program from three to six one-week programs in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $328,000. YCC is a work-study program for teens ages 15 to 18. It provides outdoor recreation, curriculum-based leadership activities, career training about the National Park Service, and multi-day work projects that help Yellowstone reduce its backlog of maintenance projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. EXPEDITION: YELLOWSTONE!<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $52,000. School groups in grades 4-8 extend their classroom walls in Yellowstone for a 4 or 5-day trip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. NATIVE FISH CONSERVATION PROGRAM<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $1 million. The Foundation is working to fund a multi-year program to reduce invasive lake trout populations, promoting native Yellowstone cutthroat trout and other fish that are an important food sources for many species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. WILDLIFE &amp; VISITOR SAFETY PROJECT<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $100,000. Teams of seasonal rangers are needed to manage numerous wildlife jams that occur each year in a way that provides for the safety of visitors and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. TRAILS FUND INITIATIVE<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $200,000. Funds help restore and repair Yellowstone\u2019s heavily used network of trails.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. STOP AQUATIC INVADERS<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $100,000. Funding aids in early detection monitoring and a rapid response program to catch aquatic invasive species before they become established.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. RAPTOR INITIATIVE<\/strong><br \/>\nFunds Needed: $85,000 one year. This 5-year program will focus on monitoring golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, kestrels, and prairie falcons.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>As the official fundraising partner for Yellowstone, the Foundation provides grant money for programs and projects identified by Superintendent Dan Wenk, helping fill the gaps in the park&#8217;s budget. Since its inception in 1996, the foundation has raised more than $75 million and helped fund more than 250 separate projects.<\/p>\n<p>Foundation President Karen Kress said donors contribute throughout the year, but December is typically a time when many choose to make a gift in someone else&#8217;s name, or to make a tax deductible contribution as part of year-end financial planning.<\/p>\n<p>Many supporters choose to direct their gift toward a specific program or project, Kress said, choosing from a diverse array of initiatives with funding needs ranging from a few thousand dollars to more than $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People like to see where their money is going, so they often choose to contribute to a specific project,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation is building a catalog that will include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ypf.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=HOW_home\" target=\"_blank\">dozens of projects and programs <\/a>from among a list of 45 funding priorities identified by the National Park Service.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation typically covers, for instance, approximately 70 percent of the budget for the Yellowstone Wolf Project, raising at least $200,000 annually to help pay for tracking collars and long-term research on the park&#8217;s wolf packs.<\/p>\n<p>Some projects funded by the foundation, like helping hire seasonal rangers to manage traffic jams around wildlife sightings, can make a big difference to the average visitor moving through the park. Others, like a long-term program that will funnel millions toward removing invasive lake trout from park waters, aren&#8217;t as obvious, but just as important, Kress said.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivating a new generation of stewards with a passion for Yellowstone is another Foundation focus. Expedition Yellowstone helps fund 4- and 5-day trips to the park for area school kids, while Youth Conservation Corps is a summer work study program for teens who spend several days living and working in the park.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a way to get these kids engaged, it makes them healthier and smarter and wiser,&#8221; Kress said. &#8220;But it also makes them want to protect areas like Yellowstone into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation doesn&#8217;t fund park maintenance or operations.
