Free entry to Yellowstone and Grand Teton on Jan. 21, other days in 2013

All of the country's national parks, including Grand Teton and Yellowstone, will offer free admission Monday and at other times throughout the year. (NPS photo)

All National Park Service sites across the nation, including Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, will waive admission fees Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday. No matter how you enter either park—by car, RV, bus or on a guided snowmobile or snowcoach trip—the entrance fee will be waived on Monday, January 21. The special free day is the first of 11 days throughout 2013 when the Park Service will waive entry fees as a way to encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy the national parks, according to a release form the Yellowstone public affairs office. Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks show off wide range of fall colors

Autumn comes earlier to the high country around Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks than in most other places around the country. By early October this year, many trees around the region are displaying dramatic blazes of fall color, while some trees have already shed their leaves altogether. Fall is a quieter time in the parks, with the summer throngs long gone and cooler weather taking hold. Praise, concern follows move by feds to pass control of wolves to Wyoming

Over objections from some environmental groups and with the praise of many sportsmen and ranchers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Friday announced the removal of wolves in Wyoming from the endangered species list. The move returns management control over gray wolves in the state to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department after a series of long-running disagreements and legal challenges over the state's dual approach to treating wolves as regulated trophy game in the greater Yellowstone area and as a predator with no protections across most of the state. Grand Teton rangers rescue imperiled climber from Teewinot Mountain area

With just minutes until the day's last rays of light faded Saturday, Grand Teton National Park rangers used a helicopter to transport an imperiled climber to a landing zone near Lupine Meadows. A search and rescue helicopter crew completes a short-haul extraction of an imperiled hiker Saturday from the Teewinot Mountain area to the Jenny Lake rescue cache near Lupine Meadows in Grand Teton National Park. (Yellowstone Gate/Ruffin Prevost - click to enlarge) Full details were not immediately available from park officials about the incident, but search and rescue personnel successfully completed a rescue operation at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Grand Teton rangers use helicopter to rescue injured hiker from Waterfalls Canyon

Grand Teton National Park rangers used a helicopter to rescue a woman Saturday from Waterfalls Canyon after she fell approximately 20 feet while ascending the canyon just above Columbine Cascades. Jessica Haines, 21, of Laguna Beach, Calif., was hiking with two companions when they decided to separate, according to information released by the Grand Teton public affairs office. A look at the Grand Teton multipurpose pathway system

Earlier this year, work was completed on a second section of the Grand Teton National Park multipurpose pathway, and public officials will hold a celebration Aug. 9 to mark the milestone. Bikers, inline skaters, joggers and others can now travel from park headquarters at Moose, Wyo. to Jackson via the pathway. For park visitors unfamiliar with the pathway, here's a look at some of the details on the rules and restrictions from park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs. The video, posted by 22Local in 2009, when the first segment was set to open, offers a look at what the pathway system is like. Climber dies after falling 1,000 feet in descent from Middle Teton summit

A mountain climber in Grand Teton National Park fell 1,000 feet to his death Sunday while descending from the summit of the Middle Teton. Justin Harold Beldin, 27 of Benicia, Calif., and two climbing partners had reached the summit of the the 12,804-foot peak and were beginning to descend at about noon when the accident occurred, according to information released Monday by the Grand Teton public affairs office. Another group of climbers near the summit of the Middle Teton saw Beldin fall and alerted Beldin's climbing partners, who did not witness the accident. Continue Reading →
