Yellowstone starts nightly closure of part of grand loop road

A portion of the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone National Park will be closed each night beginning Monday, July 27. The 5.4 mile closure will prevent through-travel between Norris Geyser Basin and Mammoth Hot Springs from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. each night. The closure is part of a multi-year road improvement project on a 16-mile stretch of road, with this year marking the final phase of the project. Nightly closures will be in effect seven days a week for the section of road just north of the entrance to the Norris Campground to the Moose Exhibit turnaround in the Willow Park area, just south of the Indian Creek Campground eight miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs. Dedication set for Yellowstone visitor center in Mammoth

Sunday, July 12, marks the celebration of the Horace M. Albright Visitor Center Grand Re-opening and Dedication. After closing the Albright Visitor Center in the fall of 2013, crews reconfigured the building for better accessibility and retrofitted it for seismic activity, as well as created new exhibits. The dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with speakers, a color guard, a ribbon cutting, and refreshments leading up to the grand re-opening of the facility to the public. Speakers include National Park Service Intermountain Regional Director Sue Masica, Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk, Board Chair of the Yellowstone Association Clare Campbell, and keynote speaker Bob Barbee, former Superintendent of Yellowstone. Yellowstone hosts new citizens in park’s first naturalization ceremony

Yellowstone National Park often plays host to a range of special occasions like marriage proposals, birthdays, family reunions and even the scattering of cremated remains. But until now, the park had never been the site for a naturalization ceremony. On a crisp, breezy, picture-perfect morning earlier this month, 42 immigrants from 20 different countries gathered near the Liberty Cap to take the oath of citizenship in what park officials said was the first observance of its kind in Yellowstone. Visitors cautioned as elk rut begins in Yellowstone

Placid elk lounging around the lawns of Mammoth Hot Springs are a favorite attraction for Yellowstone National Park visitors. But the start of the fall rut means bull elk are much more aggressive toward both people and vehicles. Several vehicles are damaged by elk every year and occasionally people are charged by elk and can be injured. Wyoming to cover costs for Yellowstone students enrolled in Montana schools

As a temporary fix for a complex, long-term problem, Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead has announced that the state will cover the $500,000 cost for children living in Mammoth Hot Springs to attend school in Gardiner, Mont. Yellowstone concessioner offers winter shuttle from Bozeman to Mammoth Hot Springs

Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the main concessioner operating lodging, restaurants and activities in Yellowstone National Park, will begin offering a winter shuttle service from the Bozeman, Mont. airport to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. Yellowstone’s Albright Visitor Center to relocate during renovation

The Albright Visitor Center in Yellowstone National Park was originally built as bachelor officer’s quarters by the United States Army in 1909.

Life wasn't easy — but it was interesting — for the soldiers who lived and worked in Yellowstone.
