Climber dies after falling 1,000 feet in descent from Middle Teton summit

Roads and facilities in Grand Teton National Park begin opening May 1.

A mountain climber in Grand Teton National Park fell 1,000 feet to his death Sunday while descending from the summit of the Middle Teton. Justin Harold Beldin, 27 of Benicia, Calif., and two climbing partners had reached the summit of the the 12,804-foot peak and were beginning to descend at about noon when the accident occurred, according to information released Monday by the Grand Teton public affairs office. Another group of climbers near the summit of the Middle Teton saw Beldin fall and alerted Beldin's climbing partners, who did not witness the accident. Continue Reading →

A video trip to the summit of Grand Teton

A 2010 video from Men's Journal magazine showing a climb to the 13,770-foot summit of Grand Teton with Exum Mountain Guides offers a glimpse at what some of the climb is like. While the climb, one of hundreds in the park, is described in the video as a relatively "attainable" ascent, it also requires being a fit and technically proficient climber. Grand Teton Park rangers rescue stranded climber from Middle Teton

Grand Teton National Park rangers on Tuesday rescued a stranded climber on Middle Teton, using a helicopter to help remove him from a sheer rock face where he had become unable to advance his climb. Eric Rohner, 27, of Olympia, Wash., began an attempted solo summit of the Middle Teton on Monday, but traveled off route and became "cliffed out," unable to safely advance or retreat without risking injury, according to a statement released by the Grand Teton public affairs office. Grand Teton peregrine falcon nest prompts closure of popular climbing spot

A pair of Grand Teton peregrine falcons nesting in a popular climbing spot had prompted a temporary closure of the area.

Grand Teton National Park managers have closed a popular climbing area to give a pair of peregrine falcons a little privacy during nesting and while fledging any chicks they may produce. Grand Teton Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott announced in a statement Friday that Baxter’s Pinnacle and its southwest descent gully will be closed immediately due to the active peregrine falcon nest. Baxter’s Pinnacle is a popular climbing route in Cascade Canyon in Grand Teton National Park. Continue Reading →

Grand Teton faces high costs for difficult search and rescue efforts

America’s national parks have a tradition of coming to the rescue of visitors in trouble and recovering the bodies of those who die on park grounds. In 2009, the most recent year for which national records are available, Park Service workers conducted 3,568 search and rescues that cost a total of more than $4.8 million. Continue Reading →
