Two celebrations of public lands projects in Jackson Hole last week drew dignitaries from across the spectrum of state, local and federal governments, and both were praised as models of cooperative efforts that have made local landscapes more livable and sustainable. The recent completion of the second phase of a multipurpose pathway connecting the Wyoming communities of Moose and Jackson was marked by separate events at both ends of the pathway. Also, the National Elk Refuge, spanning from the northern end of Jackson to the southern end of Grand Teton National Park, marked its centennial. Continue Reading →

Grand Teton warns visitors to avoid bear trapping areas, follow bear safety rules

A tranquilized grizzly bear lies in a trap similar to those used for research studies or for capturing and relocating problem bears around the greater Yellowstone area.

Grand Teton National Park managers are warning visitors to steer clear of trap sites this summer where bears are being captured as part of ongoing bear management operations, and to follow basic rules for staying safe in bear country. A small number of "nuisance bears" throughout Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway may be captured for relocation or to be euthanized, according to a statement released by the park's public affairs office. Continue Reading →

A video trip to the summit of Grand Teton

A 2010 video from Men's Journal magazine showing a climb to the 13,770-foot summit of Grand Teton with Exum Mountain Guides offers a glimpse at what some of the climb is like. While the climb, one of hundreds in the park, is described in the video as a relatively "attainable" ascent, it also requires being a fit and technically proficient climber. So if you're planning on doing any mountaineering while visiting Grand Teton National Park, it's important — as with any outdoor recreational activity — to know your limits and stay within them. About three dozen items from the most extensive and significant collection of Native American artifacts in the National Park Service are on display a newly upgraded showcase this summer as part of a renovation of the Colter Bay Visitor Center. The David T. Vernon Collection contains more than 1,400 items, and was donated by Laurence S. Rockefeller to the Park Service for display in Grand Teton National Park. But only a fraction of the items have been displayed in the Indian Arts Museum at any one time since it was added onto the Colter Bay Visitor Center in 1972. Continue Reading →

An injured hiker climbing Albright Peak in Grand Teton National Park was flown out by a helicopter Wednesday after she received medical assistance from park rangers. Danielle Mendicino, 21, of Las Vegas, was attempting to summit 10,552-foot Albright Peak with a climbing partner when she slipped on snow and fell approximately 50 feet before coming to rest in a rocky talus field, according to a statement released Thursday by the Grand Teton public affairs office. Grand Teton Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott briefs Jackson Hole officials on summer plans, construction projects

Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott said the government shutdown is "devastating to morale."

Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott had a construction hard hat sitting on the table next to her during a presentation last month for local elected officials. It wasn't just a prop, as Scott and other National Park Service employees had just moved into their recently completed new office space in Moose, and a range of construction and improvement projects are in the works for this summer and beyond. Grand Teton has a $193 million deferred maintenance backlog, Scott told Jackson Hole area elected officials in her annual briefing of the park's upcoming summer season. "We're gradually correcting it over time," she said. "But it's a continuing effort." Continue Reading →

Fearless elk hang around disinterested grizzly bear at Willow Flats in Grand Teton

Well, here's something you don't see every day. Photographer Daryl Hunter has posted a pretty perplexing video of elk and a grizzly bear behaving in a way that seems — well, you're just going to have to watch it. In Hunter's video, a grizzly bear in the Willow Flats area of Grand Teton National Park strolls into frame and, understandably, a bunch of elk trot briskly in the opposite direction. But then, something really weird happens. The grizzly does not give chase, and the elk walk right back up to the bear. Then the bear appears to wander around the herd for a few minutes, all without the bear or the elk doing what you would expect. Continue Reading →
