Ruling places Wyoming wolves back under federal control

Hunting gray wolves in Wyoming as trophy game or shooting them as predators has been banned under a ruling Tuesday by a federal judge that places the animals back under control of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington D.C. struck down a 2012 decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Wyoming and place their management under control of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. ‘Wolf warriors’ target delisting plan

A smattering of protests Monday in cities from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Seattle drew attention to wolf-hunting as well as to Thursday's deadline for comments on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list. A pro-wolf organization called Wolf and Wildlife Action Group scheduled about a dozen "civil disobedience actions" across the Midwest and West, primarily in states that allow wolf hunts. Wolf killed on private inholding within Grand Teton

Officials in Grand Teton National Park are releasing few details about a gray wolf killed Monday on private land inside the park. The individual who killed the wolf contacted Wyoming Game and Fish Department wardens, who reported the shooting to park rangers at approximately 10:30 a.m. Monday, according to a statement released by the park's public affairs office. A video shot on the north end of Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park captures a compelling showdown between a grizzly bear and a pack of wolves.

Grizzly bears are formidable predators, and even accomplished hunters like gray wolves will steer clear of them in normal circumstances. But wolves sometimes cooperate in large numbers, so it's possible that a few of them could cause trouble for a single bear. By Jason Ryan's count, 11 wolves are more than enough. Killing of high-profile wolves outside Yellowstone Park prompts Montana hunt changes

Wolf trapping and hunting in Montana has been suspended in a buffer area close to Yellowstone National Park. Montana's wolf trapping season is set to begin Dec. 15, and widespread public debate of the shooting of collared wolves prompted the changes in how the state manages that process during a vote Monday by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission. Citing the unusual circumstances of several collared wolves that frequent Yellowstone being shot in areas near the park this fall, the commissioners voted 4-1 to prohibit further hunting or trapping for the rest of the season in areas closest to the park. The coyote was extremely nervous now, and everyone was rooting for her. Run, run, we are thinking. Suddenly she does. There is probably about a foot of snow on the level for her to traverse. Rather than try to break a trail through that much snow, she chooses to follow a trail already established by someone or something. The trail leads directly towards the spectators, which doesn't bother the adaptable coyote much at all. She ran straight towards us. Continue Reading →
