A newly completed extension of the Grand Teton pathway system opened Wednesday, and Yellowstone roads throughout the park are open — all in time for the traditional Memorial Day weekend start of the 2012 summer travel season. Construction workers have wrapped up efforts on the 6-mile pathway that parallels Highway 26/89/191 from the Gros Ventre River to Moose Junction in Grand Teton National Park, and the new segment opened Wednesday to bicyclists, joggers and others for the first time. Meanwhile, scant snow along Yellowstone roads, including high mountain passes like Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone National Park and Beartooth Pass on the Beartooth Highway should make for relatively easy early season travel starting Friday, May 25. Motorists across the greater Yellowstone area should expect to see more wildlife than usual on roads over the next few weeks, as warm weather and new grass have animals on the move as part of their annual spring migration patterns. Elk, bison and other large mammals are beginning their trek from winter range back to summer pastures, and it's not uncommon for them to cross highways in large numbers. Wildlife may even to use roads as travel corridors, particularly in places where deep snow drifts or plowed snow prevents easy use of alternate routes. Continue Reading →

Grand Teton begins plowing roads in preparation for spring operations

The annual plowing of the Moose-Wilson Road and Teton Park Road in Grand Teton National Park will begin Monday, March 12. As plowing begins, recreation on the snow-packed trails will conclude for the 2011-12 winter season. Park visitors may continue to use other winter trails—or areas adjacent to these roads—for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and other activities as conditions allow. Visitors may not use the Teton Park Road while rotary snow removal equipment and plows are working. Safety precautions require that the road is closed to all users during that activity. Cody business owners worried about slow fix for crumbling Yellowstone road

Traffic in 2012 moves along a single lane of the then-damaged road between Sylvan Pass and Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park.

Repairs to a partially washed-out section of road between Sylvan Pass and Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park will not begin until at least the middle of next year, leaving some Cody business owners worried that further damage could shut down the road entirely. Part of the eastbound lane along a section of road known as "Nine Mile," near Sedge Bay, was washed away in mid-May, just days after the park's East Entrance opened for the summer season.
